Today's song of the day is "I Got Mine" by the Black Keys. The second single off their 2008 album, Attack & Release, this song immediately drags you in with a classic blues rock riff, before Auerbach (lead singer and guitarist) delivers lyrics eerily similar to hits by Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, and other blues legends as he tells listeners how he used to be a different man, but now things are pretty clear for him, he's got his. There isn't much to these lyrics, but that's what makes the song great, as you may not even know what he is talking about, but you can immediately sense the feeling of the song.
I saw the Black Keys live at the Franklin Pilgrimage Festival in Franklin, TN and they were amazing. It was an awesome festival that I highly recommend for any rock fans as I got to see Cage the Elephant, the Black Pumas, Dave Matthews Band, and a few other awesome groups, but I was particularly blown away by the Black Keys. They headlined the first of two nights I attended, and though the other bands were great, I left there feeling like I could have only seen the Black Keys that would have been worth the trip. They actually played "I Got Mine" to lead the set, and continued with several well known songs off their hit albums, Brothers, and El Camino. A little over halfway through the set they brought out Kenny Brown, a legend slide guitarist who Auerbach apparently saw play when he was 18 living in Ohio. Brown played with the legendary R.L Burnside, who's songs The Black Keys had just heavily covered in their latest album, Delta Kream. They finished the set with probably my favorite of their hits "Howlin' for You" which like "I Got Mine" should be on your playlist.
P.S Is that George (or Greg) Kittle as the bands front man?
