MUSIC - (1964) The Beatles 1st #1 hit "I Want to Hold Your Hand" tops the Billboard Hot 100. It would go on to stay there for 7 weeks until being replaced by The Beatles next hit, "She Loves You". The Beatles would go on to have 20 #1 songs on the Hot 100, and 34 top 10, along with 8 #1 albums.

I've noticed a lot of Beatles hate on Twitter and Instagram the past couple years and it's hard to understand for me. Personally, I find their music is quite timeless and enjoy a lot of their songs. Regardless of if you like their music or not, to say they suck is blasphemy. They're some of the best songwriters ever, and it's not arguable as they have the hits to prove it. Saying the Beatles suck would be like saying Kareem Abdul Jabar, 3x National Champ, 6x NBA Finals winner, and the all time scorer in NBA history sucks. The numbers don't lie. Also fun fact, "Back in the USSR" is one of the first parody songs (it parodies Chuck Berrys "Back in the USA").

SPORTS - (1967) The ABA forms with NBA center George Mikan as commisioner. The league would go on for 9 years before merging with the NBA, bringing the 3 point shot which is still in the league today.

(1992) Barry Bonds signs highest paid single year contract in MLB history for 4.7 Million with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Bonds would go onto be arguably the greatest baseball player of all time, but not a hall of famer.

(1994) Jeff Gillooly pleads guilty for his part in attack on American Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan; plea bargain, confesses to racketeering in exchange for testimony implicating ex-wife Tonya Harding. If you are not aware of this story, watch I, Tonya on Hulu. Very good movie that tells one of the most interesting stories in figure skating, and maybe even sports in general.

(1995) John Stockton passes Magic Johnson as the NBA all time leader in assists with 9,222 in a 129-98 win over the Denver Nuggets at the Delta Centre in Salt Lake City.

(1997) 1997 Future Hockey Hall of Fame defenseman Ray Bourque scores a goal and an assist to become the Boston Bruins' all-time scoring leader, with 1,341 points in an 18-year NHL career

(2004) Super Bowl XXXVIII, Reliant Stadium, Houston, TX: New England Patriots beat Carolina Panthers, 32-29; MVP: Tom Brady

(2009) Super Bowl XLIII, Raymond James Stadium, Tampa, FL: Pittsburgh Steelers beat Arizona Cardinals, 27-23; MVP: Santonio Holmes

(2014 )Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning becomes all-time record-holder for MVP trophies, winning his 5th at the NFL Honours in New York; also 2013 Offensive Player of the Year

**** I would have added NFL highlights for the super bowls/Peyton, but NFL's youtube forbids it. I encourage you to check out the superbowls, they were both amazing. The patriots one I had to rewatch as I was only 5 at the time and didn't remember watching it live at all, but the Steelers win was a great game, and one of my earliest memories as a football fan. *****

TV/MOVIES - (1893) Thomas Edison completes world's 1st movie studio at West Orange, New Jersey.

(1982) "Late Night With David Letterman" debuts on NBC-TV, Bill Murray is first guest. I wish late night TV was worth watching nowadays, but it's just spewing the same not funny political BS. Letterman was great based off the videos I've seen.

(2013) "House of Cards", starring Kevin Spacey as Frank Underwood and Robin Wright as his wife, is released on Netflix. One of the first netflix powerhouse shows. Of course, any who know this show know how it ended for Spacey.

POP CULTURE - Was going to add this under sports or music but figured Pop Culture needed something big.

(2004) Wardrobe malfunction: Janet Jackson's breast is exposed during the half-time show of Super Bowl XXXVIII, resulting in US broadcasters adopting a stronger adherence to FCC censorship guidelines. Janet apparently lost sponsorships and was kept out of the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame (which is irrelevant) due to backlash from this performance. She has arguably the most famous nipple of the 21st century.

That is all for Today in History, we'll be back tomorrow with more shit people hardly care about. Rock on M8's.
