Is This The Greatest Football Season of All Time?

Now this may have to do with recency bias from watching the past weekend of football, but I seriously think this may be the greatest football season of all time in terms of entertainment. Let's take a look at the list of amazing things we’ve watched so far this season.

  • Tom Brady being age 44, and having his best season ever statistically (besides 07’) and then calling it a quits. For those of you who were lucky enough to be born in New England, watching Tom ball out is nothing new, and we have been spoiled by his phenomenal play for the past 20+ years. I plan to write a long blog about his retirement later (once he actually announces it, no precum Adam Schefter tweets here) so for this blog let's just acknowledge that him retiring only makes this season better, as he finishes off a fantastic career at the top of his game, and the rest of the league breathes a sigh of relief.

  • While we’re on the bucs, watching the AB-BA saga go down was phenomenal to watch, so throw that on the list. Antonio Brown is a madman, but Bruce Arians is no saint (Nor can he beat one) either. Seems like he pushes players to play even if they're clearly injured, and I believe there will be a lot more to that story in the next few months. Regardless, AB running off the field shirtless while his team is losing to the Jets was absurdly entertaining.

  • Matt Stafford is finally on a good team — Stafford has quietly been one of the more electric quarterbacks to watch the past 10 years, and lead many 4th quarter comebacks (in games that no one was really watching) during his time in Detroit. Watching him light up teams in the beginning of the year was fun to watch, and seeing him on a successful team is awesome - Started writing this after the divisional round - Rams are now going to the super bowl, which I will get into farther down.

  • Cooper Kupp winning the triple crown – We can’t mention Staffords play without bringing up Cooper Kupp. He became the fourth player to win the “triple crown” (which I didn’t know was a thing) leading the league in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdown receptions this year. The only other 3 guys to do this were Jerry Rice, Sterling Sharpe, and Steve Smith– meaning this was a very historic season. What really seals how fun Kupp and the rams were to watch was that the numbers really weren’t watered down, as Kupp put up consistent numbers against pretty much every team he played, putting up 90+ yards in every game but one, and going for over 120 yards 7 times.

  • Last thing I gotta add about the Rams, OBJ's dad getting him out of Cleveland was the most baller shit ever. OBJ is a lot of things - a Diva, a world class athlete, maybe a bit egotistical, but one thing he is not is useless, and that's what it felt like he was in Cleveland. His dad called this out, and got him freed (S/o the boys at PMT) and now he is going to be playing in the superbowl. He may not be as good as his Giants days, but the guy can play football and has put up solid WR2 numbers since joining LA, so good for him.

  • Aaron Rodgers had arguably his best season yet, and no one gave a shit. I couldn’t tell what I enjoyed more, watching him dominate (until the playoffs of course) or watching the media come up with something different to despise him for every week. I honestly never had much of an opinion on Rodgers, he was always a quiet guy, and the only thing I knew about him besides his dominance in regular season play was the beef with his family. The guy finally shows his personality this year (shocker he’s kinda weird) and the whole world went nuts. Safe to say, a lot of good football and even better drama came out of Green Bay this year.

Guy Still Can't Drink

  • Ja'Marr I hear it - Ja'Marr I like it!! The Bengals have been a rollercoaster of a team this year, and though I'm once again bias as an LSU fan, but Burrow and Chase have been as good a duo as any in the NFL this year. Chase put up a historic rookie season, as he broke former LSU teammate Justin Jeffersons rookie receiving yard record. The bengals started out hot, but midway through they started to fall off a bit, and people wrote them off due to there secondary and lack of talent at the O-line positions. Week 17 Burrow and Chase torch the Chiefs to comeback and win the division, and then we see them take care of business versus the Raiders, and upset both the Titans and Chiefs, as they're now superbowl bound. One thing I think most sports fans can agree on is that we love an underdog story. This Bengals team is that underdog story. They have been written off by everyone except Cincy fans, and continue to be as they're 5 point underdogs for the superbowl. Regardless of if they win this year, the story in cincy has been very fun to watch play out.

  • The evolution of football --- People will always say that a sport was better back when they were more interested in it, and there's an argument to be made that the physicality of the game in past years was more enjoyable to watch, but in my opinion, football is as exciting as ever. The evolution of players has been insane, as we're seeing players excel in multiple roles, and a change in overall philosophies in the game. Players like Deebo Samuel or Cordarrelle Patterson are so fun to watch as they play such large roles in both the rushing and passing game. Deebo particularly is such a game changer out there, as he has the speed to beat most corners and safetys over the top, while being over 200 pounds and strong enough to be a power 3rd down back who will go through a linebacker for a first down. They say it is a copycat league, so most likely we will see more coaches and OC's attempt to incorporate receivers and backs into multiple roles like Deebo, and i'm all for it.

  • Lastly, the chiefs aren't in the superbowl. This. Think about this and try to tell me this isn't the best season you have ever watched. We don't have to see Brittany and Jackson Mahomes do tik-toks or spray champagne all over people anymore. We don't have to see the Chiefs go to their fourth straight superbowl. We don't have to even think about them except for to have a good laugh at how they choked that game to the bengals away. (not kicking it at end of first half will haunt chief fans for the next year) we can just forget about them until next year. Seriously though, new teams in the Super bowl is good for football, people hate to see the same team continue to be successful, and the Bengals and Matt Stafford's Rams were far from favorites to be in this position, so let's appreciate that we don't have to watch a repeat of last years Bucs vs Chiefs again.

Alright, I'm probably missing a few things from this season (Like how you bastards got to watch the pats get destroyed in the Wild card, must have been fun to watch for the rest of league) but I think I made my point. This year was awesome and whether it was the best ever or not, I'm sad it is almost over. Only two weeks till I care about hockey and basketball again.
